Member of the Arrhythmia Alliance, STARS (Syncope Trust And Reflex anoxic Seizures), is currently establishing an education project. The lack of knowledge and understanding surrounding syncope has meant, for the majority of cases, that the staff and carers responsible for a sufferer do not know how to manage in the event of a syncopal episode. Thus, there is often inadequate support available for pupils and students with heart rhythm disorders and their effects, such as syncope. The predominant aim of this scheme is to increase awareness, knowledge and understanding amongst teachers, staff and carers in educational settings nationwide. Education of those responsible for a young sufferer will mean that they are able to provide maximum support for their charge. Alongside this, STARS plan to launch a general campaign in schools, colleges and universities, to raise awareness of heart rhythm disorders. Project resources will consist of an advisory website, information pack, educational and training DVD, and in-house presentations. The groundwork is progressing well, but the rate at which it can be implemented is dependent on both funding and volunteers. If any A-A members are willing and able to offer their help to make the project a success; whether it be by offering advice, becoming a volunteer presenter or fundraiser, STARS would love to hear from you!
