Know Your Pulse

Knowing your Pulse can save your life

  • If pulse check were routine within the NHS, thousands of lives, and thousands of debilitating strokes, could be saved every year
  • Learn how to take you pulse now
  • Help us campaign for routine pulse checks within the NHS

Why should you ‘Know Your Pulse’?
  • The easiest way to detect an arrhythmia is to feel the pulse – uneven, too fast, too slow?
  • More than two million Britons are affected by an arrhythmia
  • Heart rhythm disorders are Britain’s biggest killer
  • Arrhythmias cause at least 75,000 sudden cardiac deaths each year in the UK; over 200 every day, more deaths than breast cancer, lung cancer and AIDS combined
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) causes 12,000 debilitating and fatal strokes in the UK each year
  • At the age of 40, we all have a 1 in 4 life-time risk of developing AF which increases the risk of stroke 500%
  • 120,000 people experience unexplained loss of consciousness each year, commonly a sign of a heart rhythm disorder
  • There is no national programme of pulse checks or heart rhythm screening

The Know Your Pulse (KYP) campaign was the cornerstone of Heart Rhythm Week in 2010 and 2011.  It has provided a campaigning focus for thousands of events and has led to some significant advances in awareness, policy and the management of heart rhythm disorders.

The campaign continues today, promoting the need for us all to be aware of our pulse, and for the need to include routine manual pulse checks within the NHS.

A-A’s national awareness campaign ‘Know Your Pulse’ was rolled out throughout Corby, as part of a pilot scheme working in partnership with NHS Corby Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS East Midlands Cardiovascular Network. Pulse check events took place at Corby East Midlands International Pool and at the town's Asda store.

A big thank you to all involved; throughout the week our team of fabulous volunteers checked the pulses of 556 people and identified 7 people with an irregular pulse and potential heart rhythm disorder. These people are now being referred to an appropriate medical professional.
